When we first meet I’ll be curious to learn what brings you into treatment. There are also a good many past history items to explore early on, that may be relevant. After a couple of meetings, we will establish an initial treatment plan. That may include talk therapy, a recommendation of medications, and often both. On occasion a referral to a different treatment may be necessary in addition to, or instead of our working together. We will review our work regularly and adjust according to our experience over time.
Sessions are conversational. Using ISTDP techniques, we may look closely at the real-time experience of feelings to unlock stuck patterns. Using MBT, we may notice the way that minds behave — yours, mine, or important others in your life — and try taking new perspectives. For example, a people-pleaser may neglect their own self. So we might explore how that happens, and what emerges if we instead try and find their self-experience? I strive that sessions feel enlivened, effective, and focused to your stated goals.
Patients often present with symptoms broadly categorized as depression or anxiety. You might be lonely, disconnected, feeling unempowered. You might be having relationship conflict, family dynamics, difficulties with intimacy. Unhelpful habits like substances, addiction, or avoidance may have revved up. Sometimes folks are adjusting to a new stage of life, career, or an unexpected outcome or health condition. We may also be working to treat more specific psychiatric conditions for example attention deficit disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar conditions, or schizophrenia. Together, you and me will work toward a shared understanding of your experiences and develop a plan based on both immediate needs and longer-term goals.

I completed my medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, my psychiatry residency at the University of New Mexico Hospital including serving as chief resident, and a fellowship at Silver Hill Hospital. I have worked intensively with individuals, led group-therapy, and supervised interdisciplinary teams. I practice general, adult psychiatry.
On a more personal note, I live within the work, and outside it too! I’m originally from Oklahoma but have moved around the USA on my way. The arts especially music speak to me. I haven’t done much writing about psychiatry, but I do songwrite which feels like a neighboring art or science to the depth work we do together. One of my favorite contemporary therapists and writers about therapy is Adam Phillips. And from time to time, if we’re meeting virtually, you may meet one or both of my cats, Prudence and Roland. I keep it professional. But I also hope the space we cocreate can be human, real, and making new possibilities. Let’s talk!
